Step One
Choose the Right Stain for a Pump Sprayer
Not all wood stain is built the same. Some stain is meant to be applied with a brush and roller, and some are perfectly fine to apply with a pump sprayer.
Olympic Smartguard is specifically formulated to be applied with a spraying device. It's perfect as a clear sealant to protect wood while letting you see the natural wood.
Olympic Maximum stains also apply beautifully when used in a pump sprayer, and give you more choices for color and opacity.

Step Two
Prepare the Fence for Staining
You will need to clean and clear your fence:
-
You cannot begin spraying a sealant or stain on your fence until you’ve cleaned it and cleared away anything up against it.
-
Remember that spraying a wood stain can cause issues with bushes and flowers against the fence, so cover them if you have vegetation nearby.
Make sure you’ve moved away any vehicles if the fence is near your driveway.

Step Three
Stain with a Pump Sprayer
Pumping is the name of the game when using a sprayer:
-
Simply open up your stain sprayer and pour in your wood stain or mix.
-
Then turn and seal the lid counter-clockwise to create an air seal. This allows you to build up the vacuum within the sprayer so you can spray it as needed.
-
The sprayer will have a handle coming from the top near the hose. Once the lid is sealed and you are ready to go, all you need to do is begin pumping the handle to build up the internal pressure in the sprayer.
-
As soon as you press the trigger on the hose this pressure will be released, forcing the fence stain out wherever the nozzle is pointed.
-
Make sure you apply from around 10 inches away and never point the nozzle anywhere you do not want stain.
